La scuola si presenta:
La storia dell’ I.T.I.S. “Archimede” è parte della storia della città, quasi un secolo di tradizione nel corso del quale si sono formate molte generazioni di periti, dirigenti e quadri tecnici, che hanno contribuito alla diffusione della cultura tecnologica, uno degli aspetti caratterizzanti delle realtà produttive della città di Catania e della sua area metropolitana. La lunga storia comincia nel 1876, quando il Ministro dell’agricoltura, industria e commercio S. Majorana Calatabiano, competente anche per l’istruzione professionale, incoraggia Comune, Provincia e Camera di Commercio a consorziarsi per dar vita ad una scuola industriale. L’effettiva apertura della Scuola avrà luogo nel 1882 con due corsi serali di durata triennale: arte industriale e industrie meccaniche. Nel 1891 apre anche la sezione per conduttori di caldaie a vapore e nel 1906 la sezione di elettrotecnica.
Con decreto luogotenenziale n. 1735 si istituisce la Regia Scuola Industriale, classificata quale Scuola professionale di 1° e 2° grado a indirizzo meccanici-elettricisti. Provvisoriamente sarà ospitata nei locali dell’ex Casa di Nutrizione in via C. Ardizzoni.
Agli inizi degli anni Sessanta, per soddisfare nuove esigenze che premono sul mondo della scuola, oltre alle sezioni di Meccanica ed Elettrotecnica, nell’Istituto “Archimede” vengono introdotti due nuovi indirizzi: Elettronica Industriale e Telecomunicazioni.
Il Corso Serale ha le specializzazioni autorizzate: Termotecnica (Ergon), Elettronica e Telecomunicazioni (Progetto SIRIO), Informatica (Progetto SIRIO), Elettrotecnica (Progetto SIRIO), Meccanica (Progetto SIRIO), per studenti lavoratori.
Oggi l’Istituto continua a prestare il suo servizio al territorio offrendo una proposta didattica ampia, che coniuga le istanze del mercato del lavoro con una preparazione tecnica ed umana, affinché gli alunni siano formati ad essere uomini e cittadini maturi e responsabili, capaci di dare il loro contributo di crescita in tutti gli ambienti nei quali si troveranno ad operare.
Il Dirigente Scolastico, prof.ssa Vetri Daniela Fortunata:
Oltre alle normali attività curriculari, l’IT “Archimede” ha stipulato convenzioni con Enti di formazione professionale ed ha istituito presso la propria sede “Percorsi sperimentali di istruzione e formazione professionale” (di cui all’accordo del 26/01/2007 tra il Presidente della Regione Sicilia, il Dirigente Generale del Dipartimento della Pubblica Istruzione, il Dirigente Generale del Dipartimento Formazione Professionale, il Direttore Generale del Dipartimento Agenzia per l’Impiego ed il Direttore Generale dell’Ufficio Scolastico Regionale per la Sicilia del Ministero della Pubblica Istruzione) finalizzati a favorire il rispetto dell’obbligo scolastico anche fra i ragazzi meno interessati ai corsi scolastici tradizionali.
L’Istituto è sede d’esami per il conseguimento della “Patente informatica europea” (ECDL). Il prestigio dell’Istituto fa sì, poi, che da decenni il MIUR lo individui come sede per lo svolgimento degli Esami di Abilitazione alla Libera Professione di Perito Industriale per la Sicilia orientale.
